These baskets were originally made by the men who manned the navigational lightships moored off the coast of Nantucket Island, warning mariners of the treacherous waters off the east coast of the island. Seamen aboard these lightships spent their long off-duty hours creating baskets, still known as Nantucket Lightship baskets. Eventually, these same men established themselves on the island, making and selling their utilitarian baskets. In the latter half of the 1940s, a Filipino, Jose Formoso Reye, who had for some time been creating Nantucket baskets, designed and added a lid to his baskets, giving birth to the much sort-after Friendship purse basket, which today is still one of the most prized baskets among collectors. These baskets are world travelers and recognized wherever they go. As they age, they mellow and develop a gold or rich brown patina. They are prized as collectors’ pieces and heirlooms.
